Preface
Dr. Ong Gek Bee
(Paediatric Oncologist, Sarawak General Hospital)
Jacklyn was a frightened little girl when we first met her. She fought and there were tears of fear and anger. And were we surprised?
No…after all we were the bearer of bad news, that she had medulloblastoma (a type of brain tumour), that surgery was not enough and hopefully; for her to be a long term survivor, she had to undergo not only radiotherapy but also chemotherapy.
Her parents were her pillars of strength and slowly she began to cooperate and started to trust us. Paediatric Ward 2A was accepted as a part of her life, not a place to fear but a place to turn to whenever there was a need. We were all pleased when treatment was completed.
Unfortunately, shortly after that, she presented back to our ward with stroke which was initially thought to be a complication of her treatment. When she deteriorated, our worst fears were confirmed. Any cancer that relapses almost always means that the eventual outcome would be very poor. There is only so much that a body, especially one so small can take. Sometimes we can still achieve a cure but most of the time we can only support and always, we will try our best to keep them as comfortable as possible.
Breaking the bad news to the family was one of the most difficult things a doctor has to do. We shared both the anguish and sadness that the family went through. During this difficult time Jacklyn’s parents were very understanding and caring. The focus of care changed from cure to providing comfort. In her last days, Jacklyn lapsed in and out of consciousness. We made sure that she felt no pain and supported her throughout. In the end, it was a short battle. GOD loved her more. She passed away peacefully.
Jacklyn was a beautiful, charming little girl whom we were all very fond of. She fought bravely throughout her illness. For one so young, she showed great strength and endurance. We will all miss her, may she rest in peace.
